Labels and hazard markings are one of the most time-consuming areas for manufacturers, distributors, and webshops that sell chemical products. Each label must comply with the CLP regulation, be correct in the local language, and be updated when the rules change. Many companies do this manually – and therefore spend hundreds of working hours each year.
With automated label management through VARSL & CLP-Helper, you can eliminate most of the manual work and at the same time be sure that your labels always comply with the law.
Read more about the requirements at the Danish Environmental Protection Agency, ECHA and in the revised CLP regulation (2024).
Why are labels important?
The label is the consumer’s first source of information. It shows whether a product is flammable, harmful to health, or dangerous to the environment. Therefore, the CLP regulation places very precise requirements on:
- Hazard symbols (pictograms).
- Signal words (“Danger” or “Warning”).
- H-statements (Hazard statements).
- P-statements (Precautionary statements).
- Supplier information.
The purpose of CLP is to protect consumers and workers – and the label is the primary way this happens.
The challenge with manual label management
Time consumption
When the CLP regulation must be complied with online, it requires that hazard symbols, signal words, H- and P-statements, and access to updated SDS are displayed directly on the product’s page.
If done manually, it typically takes about 30 minutes per product the first time – assuming you remember all the statutory elements and have the right data available.
For a webshop with 500 products, this means around 250 working hours for the initial setup alone. And that’s just the beginning – after that, data must also be kept up to date every time CLP or SDS rules change, which again requires time and resources.
Risk of errors
- Forgotten symbols or incorrect H-statements.
- SDS and labels do not match.
- Outdated versions are still online.
Missing language versions
An SDS or a label in English is not legal in Denmark. All labels must be in the recipient country’s official language.
CLP’s requirements for labels – also online
For e-commerce, the same rules apply as for physical labels. According to the Danish Environmental Protection Agency:
- Hazard symbols, signal words and H-/P-statements must appear directly on the product page.
- The customer could see the danger before the product is placed in the basket.
- An SDS must be available in the correct language.
👉 It is not enough to store information in a PDF in a tab.
Authorities’ control and enforcement
CLP is enforced by national authorities and ECHA. In Denmark, it is the Danish Environmental Protection Agency that supervises.
- Inspection visits to webshops and manufacturers.
- Orders to change labels or remove products.
- Possible fines for non-compliance.
According to the Danish Environmental Protection Agency (December 2024), the new CLP regulation will increase focus on online sales and ensure that consumers are not misled by missing or incorrect information.
The solution: Automated label management
With VARSL & CLP-Helper, labels can be generated and updated automatically:
- EAN lookup: Enter EAN or product data – CLP-Helper retrieves the correct information.
- Automatic labeling: The system generates hazard symbols, signal words and H-/P-statements.
- Language versions: Labels are delivered in all EU languages.
- Updates: When rules change, the labels are updated automatically.
- Webshop crawling: The system finds products without correct CLP data.
Time saving in practice
Manual process
- 500 products × 30 minutes = 250 hours.
Automated process
- 500 products × 5 seconds = approx. 45 minutes.
👉 That is a saving of over 200 working hours – equivalent to more than a month’s full-time work.
Extra function: SDS for the customer
As part of the label management, CLP-Helper can also ensure that customers receive the latest SDS automatically when they buy a product.
- Better service.
- Greater customer confidence.
- Documented compliance.
Who benefits from automated label management?
- Webshops with many products.
- Manufacturers who continuously change formulations.
- Wholesalers/distributors with several language markets.
- B2B suppliers who must ensure documentation for professional customers.
